My daughter has a palate expander in her mouth, which means that she can only eat certain things. S’mores is one of the things on the list that she can’t have. Caramel Apple S’mores are her favorite, and this one makes her especially sad. So I modified it a little for her and now she eats them whenever she wants to. Minus the caramel, unfortunately.
First, take a look at these: don’t they look like the best apple dessert ever?
Pretty amazing, right?
The recipe is simple – take your favorite ingredients and layer them.
Easy Caramel Apple S'mores
Ingredients
- 12 graham crackers
- 2 granny smith apples, sliced 1/4 inch thick
- 6 marshmallows
- caramel sauce
Instructions
- Begin by toasting marshmallows (preferably on a campfire)\
- Place toasted marshmallow on a graham cracker
- Drizzle caramel on top of the marshmallow
- Layer an apple slice on top
- Drizzle more caramel on the apple slice
- Add a graham cracker on top to make a sandwich.
Okay, not really that simple. There is actually an art to toasting the perfect marshmallow, and everyone has a different idea of what it should turn out like. Some like it barely toasted (like in my pictures), some like it brown on the outside and ooey gooey on the inside, some like it even darker, and some love it burned. Like literally on fire and then blown out. Personally, I like the brown toasted with ooey gooey in the middle, but my daughter can’t have that kind because of her palate expander. No stickies. She has hers untoasted, which is totally fine too.
You start by toasting the perfect marshmallow (see above). Once that is done, you – carefully so you don’t get burned – place it on the graham cracker.
Next, add some caramel sauce. When it comes to these s’mores I usually just buy some caramel apple dip, but I do know how to make a tasty caramel sauce. You can also buy the Kraft caramel squares and just melt them in the microwave. Be warned – those tiny wrappers are a pain and you may eat more than you put in the bowl.
You’ll then put your sliced apple on top of the marshmallow. I slice them about 1/4 inch thick, but you can slice them any way you want to. It should also be noted that I core them before I slice them. Granny Smith is what’s used in this recipe, though you can really use any apple you like. It just happens to be my daughter’s favorite.
Top that apple with a little bit more caramel sauce just to make the graham cracker stick, and you’ve got the most delicious caramel apple s’more that you’ve ever thought possible.
Yes, it’s that easy. You can call them “healthy” if you want to because apples are healthy, right? Kind of like chocolate is a vegetable. So that would make caramel apple S’mores healthy. Which is awesome because you’ll definitely want S’more. Pun intended. Okay, so I’m overreaching with this one.
Can I make caramel apple s’mores in my oven?
Technically, you can make any s’mores recipe in the oven – all you have to do is put the graham crackers on the bottom and place the marshmallows on top. This works great in the toaster oven too if you are making caramel apple s’mores for two. You can even microwave them that way.
That said, you won’t get the toasty outer layer that makes s’mores, well, s’mores. It will just be melty marshmallow on a graham cracker. This recipe works best with campfire marshmallows.
If you decide to make them in the oven or microwave, just put the graham cracker and the marshmallow in there. The rest can go on after, or you’ll have a huge mess that’s too hot to touch with your hands anyway. Besides, warm apples just don’t do it for this recipe.
