Nothing says fall quite like apples and caramel. Especially here in Upstate NY. Florida has oranges, Georgia has peaches, and NY has apples. Lots and lots of apples. One of my favorite ways to use those apples is in air fryer caramel stuffed apple donuts. This recipe is easy and fabulous. You’ll love it!

Ingredients for easy caramel stuffed apple donuts
- 1 roll of pizza dough
- 1 apple
- 2 tbsp caramel sauce
- ¼ cup of sugar
- 1tsp cinnamon
- ¼ cup of melted butter
Directions for easy air fryer caramel stuffed apple donuts
I start by dicing up the apples and cooking them until they’re soft. You don’t want them too soft or they’ll turn to applesauce, but nice soft chunks is the consistency you’re looking for. You have to stir pretty consistently. It takes around 6 minutes.
Next, stir the caramel sauce in and remove it from the heat. If you leave it too long in the pan, it will burn.
While the apples are cooling, roll out the pizza dough onto a parchment lined tray. This is also a good time to preheat the air fryer to 350.
Cut the dough into 6×2 inch strips. It’s important that you have at least that 2 inch width throughout, so if you’ve got an unsteady hand, go with wider rather than thinner strips.
Place the apple mixture down the middle of each strip of dough.
Cinch the sides, creating a long tube filled with apples and caramel. It’s important that you’re really gentle with the dough here or you’ll end up with holes that the filling can come out of.
Create a circle and cinch the sides. You officially have a donut!
Cook the donuts in the air fryer for 6 minutes, shake (or flip, depending on your air fryer)and cook for an additional 3 minutes.
In a medium sized bowl, melt butter.
In another bowl, add sugar and cinnamon.
Dip the donut first in the butter and then coat with sugar and cinnamon.
Lick your fingers. Kidding, but seriously you’ll want to.

How do I choose the best apples?
Like I said before, I live in Upstate New York, so apple picking is a common thing. There are orchards everywhere, and if you have a child you will definitely be taking a field trip to one!! If you are picking apples, pick from as high as you can and get the ones with no dents or bruises. You want apples that are ripe but not too ripe or they will rot quickly.
What type of apples should I use?
You can use any apples, really. Gala and Granny Smith are my favorites to bake with. Gala is much sweeter than Granny Smith, but Granny Smith is a lot harder of an apple and will keep its form better than any other kind. I’ve also used Macintosh, Empire, and Golden delicious to make apple treats. Red delicious is definitely delicious, but a little bit too soft for baking in my opinion. I use that one to make applesauce sometimes.
Can I freeze Air Fryer Caramel Stuffed Donuts?
You can freeze them if you want to, but I’d let them thaw naturally rather than thawing them in the microwave. Just like pizza that you heat up the next day, the dough can get hard when you microwave it.
How long are the donuts good for?
I wouldn’t keep easy air fryer caramel stuffed apple donuts more than a day or two – just like any other donuts, they’ll go stale.
