Soup is one of my favorite things to make, and for whatever reason, it’s one of the things I’m pretty good at making. The recipe for Instant Pot creamy ham and tortellini soup came about because I was actually craving grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches, but I didn’t know my way around the store and happened upon ham steak instead.
Pork is pork, right? So I grabbed a ham steak, came home, and decided to cube it up and make Instant Pot Scalloped Potatoes with Ham. Only we had no potatoes. UGH. Isn’t that always the way it goes? I wasn’t about to drive back to the store.
Next best thing? Tortellini. Which doesn’t make a good scalloped dish! In desperation, I threw a few more things in the Instant Pot and ended up with one of the most amazing soups I’ve ever eaten. Here’s how I came up with creamy ham and tortellini soup.
Ingredients for Instant Pot Creamy Ham and Tortellini Soup:
1 tbsp oil
1 Ham Steak or 2 lbs cooked ham, cubed
Bag of frozen tortellini
2 32 oz Cartons of chicken broth
1 medium onion
1 cup heavy cream
1 tsp of minced garlic (more or less to taste)
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Using the saute function, saute the cubed ham and onion together in the oil until the onions are tender.
Next, add the tortellini, chicken broth, and garlic to the Instant Pot.
Close the lid, make sure the pot is set to sealing, and cook for 5 minutes on the soup or high pressure setting.
Natural pressure release. This is very important. If you don’t naturally release the pressure, you will have soup all over your kitchen. (Do not ask me how I know this.)
When the pressure is released, add a cup of heavy cream to the soup and mix well.
Salt and Pepper to Taste. Serve immediately.

Questions People Ask:
This probably isn’t the soup you want to make if you’re on a diet. The tortellini is high in carbs and the heavy cream is high in calories.
You can freeze the soup prior to adding the cream. After the heavy cream is added, I wouldn’t recommend freezing it. Cream doesn’t always thaw well.
This soup would be great with veggies! The only reason I didn’t add them is because I was craving something entirely different. That said, broccoli or corn would be delicious in there!
There are a lot of things you can do to vary this soup – as long as you keep the ham and tortellini, you really can’t go wrong. Off the top of my head, things that you could add to the soup are carrots, corn, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach, and other vegetables. You could also add some of your favorite shredded cheese for an extra cheesy soup.
I like to serve Instant Pot Ham & Tortellini soup with a salad and a nice piece of crusty bread. That said, you can really serve it with anything you want to, and if you add vegetables to the soup, you have a complete meal in itself.
